Shoulder and Upper Arm Flashcards
What is the origin of the pectoralis minor?
Anterior surface of ribs 3-5 (or 2-4)
What is the insertion of the pectoralis minor?
Coracoid process of the scapula
What is the action of the pec minor?
draws scapula forward and downwards (ribs fixed)
drabs rip cage superiorly (scapula fixed)
What is the origin of the subclavius?
Costal cartilage of rib 1
What is the insertion of the subclavius?
groove on the inferior surface of the clavicle
What is the function of the subclavius?
Stabilizes and depresses pectoral gridle
What is the origin of the serratus anterior?
by series of muscle slips from ribs 1-9
What is the insertion of the serratus anterior?
Anterior surface of the vertebral border of the scapula
What is the action of the serratus anterior?
An agonist to protract and hold scapula against rib cage
rotates scapula (inferior angle laterally and upward)
Abducts and rasies arm and horizontal movements
What is the origin of the trapezius?
Occipital bone, ligamentum nuchae, spines of C7-T12
What is the insertion of the trapezius?
Spine and acromion of scapula, lateral 3rd of clavicle
What is the action of the trapezius?
Stabilizes, raises, retracts and rotates scapula
Adducts and retracts scapula (middle)
Elevates scapula or synergist to head extension
Depresses scapula and shoulder
What is the origin of the Levator Scapulae?
Transverse process of C1-C4
What is the insertion of the Levator Scapulae?
medial border of scapula, superior to spine
What is the action of the levator scapulae?
Elevates and adducts scapula ( Assists/synergist to traps)
Tilts glenoid cavity down, flexes neck to same side (fixed scapula)
What is the origin of the rhomboid minor?
The spinous process of C7 and T1
What is the insertion of the rhomboid minor?
Medial border of scapula
What is the action of the rhomboid minor?
Retracts scapula (squaring shoulders)
Synergist with middle fibers of trapezius
Rotate glenoid cavity (lowers arm against resistance)
Stabilize scapula
What is the origin of the rhomboid major?
Spinous process of T2 and T5
