what are you assess with the shoulder inspection?

A

anterior and lateral aspects of the shoulder, shoulder girdle and upper limb
- scars, bruising, swelling, boney prominences, deltoid wasting

inspect the scapula and muscles posterior
- scars, trapezius, supraspinatus and infraspinatus asymmetry
scoliosis
winged scapula (have patient push up against a wall)?

what are you assessing in the shoulder palpation

A

first assess shoulder joint temperature using back of hands (inflammation or arthritis)

  • SC joint
  • clavicle
  • AC joint
  • acromion
  • coracoid process
  • spine of scapula
  • greater tubercle of humerus
  • biceps tendon
  • Subacromial and subdeltoid bursae
  • Supraspinatus is directly below the acromion,
  • Infraspinatus is posterior to supraspinatus, Teres minor is posterior and inferior to supraspinatus
