Alliteration
The occurrence of the same letter or sound at the beginning of adjacent words
Allusion
-An expression designed to call something outside of the story to mind
-A reference to something else
Author’s Craft
The tools and techniques the author uses to tell a story
Characterzation
A literary device the author uses to describe the qualities of a character through narration, dialogue, and action in order to develop a character in the story.
Climax
The most intense or exciting part of the story
Conflict
A struggle between opposing forces
Context Clues
Information about a word that helps the reader understand its meaning
Dialogue
A conversation between two or more people
Exposition
-Important background information within a story
-Usually includes the setting and characters
Flashbacks
A transition in a story to an earlier time that interrupts the normal order of events
Foreshadowing
A literary device in which a writer gives an advance hint of what is to come later in the story
Genre
Categories of literature organized by specific characteristics
Hyperbole
An extreme exaggeration
Irony
When an event or statement seems to deliberately be the opposite of what is expected
Main idea
-The overall idea of a paragraph or section of a text
-What the section is mostly about
Metaphor
-A direct comparison
-Comparing two unlike things without using like or as
Mood
When the writing evokes certain feelings or vibes to the reader
Onomatopoeia
A word that imitates its sound
Personification
When human characteristics are given to something nonhuman
Perspective
When the story is told through a particular set of eyes so that the reader understands that particular character’s thoughts and feelings
Point of View
The way in which the story is told:
-First person
-Second person
-Third person: limited or omniscient
Resolution
The ending of a story
Rhyme Scheme
The ordered pattern of rhymes at the ends of the lines of a poem or verse
Rising Action
A series of relevant incidents that create suspense interest and tension in a story
Symbolism
An object or concept that represents something else.
Setting
The time and place of a story
Simile
A comparison of two unlike things using the words like or as
Text Structure
How the information within a written text is organized
Theme
-The message of the author
-The meaning behind a story
External Conflict
Man vs. Man, Man vs. Society, Man vs. Nature, Man vs. Techologhy
Internal Conflict
Man vs. Self
First Person
Told from the perspective of a story’s narrator
Second Person
Address the reader directly
Third Person– Limited
Only know what is going on inside the mind of one person
Third Person–Omniscient
Full knowledge of all characters and situations
