A piece of free land that people claimed from the government. They had to live and work on it for five years to keep it.

When certain prime areas of land were opened for homesteading, people would race to claim the best plots.

A
A belief by Americans in the 1800’s that the United States was destined to expand west all the way to the Pacific ocean.
