short answer questions Flashcards

1
Q

How would one charge their socks by friction on a carpet? What would happen if that person touched a doorknob?

A

The electrons from the wool carpet leave and go into the socks and the person wearing the socks. If the person touched a doorknob all the excess electrons would leave into the doorknob and a small spark would be seen to be grounded.

Q

How is lightning created?

A

Lightning is an electric current. Within a thundercloud way up in the sky, many small bits of ice (frozen raindrops) bump into each other as they move around in the air. All of those collisions create an electric charge via friction. After a while, the whole cloud fills up with electrical charges and KAPOW KACHOW↗

Q

How does a lightning rod work?

A

The thick metal rod is connected to the highest part of a building and connected to the ground as well. This metal rod then directs the charge through the conductor to the ground. Lightning rods are positively charged therefore it attracts lightning to it OR collects negatively charged particles around it so that it diverts the lightning.
