SHOCK AND SYSTEMIC INFLAMMATORY RESPONSE SYNDROME Flashcards
HYPERVOLEMIC SHOCK
Most common type of shock in cats + dogs
Results in < blood volume
Usually caused by: Trauma, hemorrhage, severe vomiting, diarrhea
SIGNS OF HYPERVOLEMIC SHOCK
Prolonged CRT
Weak pulse
Pale mM
Altered mentation
DISTRIBUTIVE SHOCK
Misdistribution of blood flow and pooling of blood in the capillaries
Seen in:
Anaphylaxis
Sepsis
Heatstroke
Envenomation
OBSTRUCTIVE SHOCK
Impaired venous return to the heart.
Where physical obstruction to the flow of blood within the body, leads to inadequate blood flow and tissue oxygenation
The obstruction impedes blood flow which results in low blood pressure
OBSTRUCTIVE SHOCK can be seen in:
Gastric dilation volvus
pericardial tamponade
CARDIOGENIC SHOCK
Considered to be secondary to heart conditions
CARDIOGENIC SHOCK Symptoms
Weak pusles
Hypotension – LOW BLOOD PRESSURE
Pale MM
Cold extremities
Pulmonary edema
Abnormal build up of fluid in the lungs
Ascites
SEPTIC SHOCK
Happens after a severe infection or tissue damage
SEPTIC SHOCK symptoms
Bright red mm due to inflammatory vasodilation
Bounding pulses
SYSTEMIC INFLAMMATORY RESPONSE SYNDROME
SIRS consists of widespread tissue damage, hyporexia, and inflammation that accompany shock
SYSTEMIC INFLAMMATORY RESPONSE SYNDROME signs
Wide spread vasodilation
Hypotension
Tachycardia
Pachpnea
Fever
Alterations in leukocyte counts
