CRANIAL
Closer to the head
CAUDAL
Closer to the tail
ROSTRAL
Refers to parts of the head, towards the tip of the nose
DORSAL
Closer to the back or spine
Top of Surface
VENTRAL
Towards the belly, the side of the animal closest to the gound
opposite to DORSAL
LATERAL
farther away from the medial plane
towards the side (L or R)
MEDIAL
towards the median plane, towards the centre line of the body (spine)
SUPERFICIAL
Towards the surface of the body or body part
DEEP
Towards the centre of the body or body part
PROXIMAL
Towards the body
used to describe a position on an extremity (limb, ears, tails)
DISTAL
Away from the body
used to describe a position on an extremity (limb, ears, tails)
PLANTAR
refers to the surface that touches the round on the rear limb
PALMAR
Refers to the surface that touches the ground on the front limb
ORAD
Refers to movement within the GI system in the direction of the mouth
ABORAD
Describes motion in the direction away from the mouth
