Layers of the Epidermis Flashcards
Basal Layer
Statum Basale
Deepest Layer of the epidermis
Actively dividing, giving birth to the cells that get pushed upward to form the upper layers of the epidermis
Has 3 types of cells
- Keratinocyte = produce keratin
- Melanocyte = produce melanin
- Merkel Cell = Associated with nerve endings
Spiny Layer
Stratum Spinosum
2nd deepest layer
has 1-3 layers of living cells that come from the bottom most layer
Contains the prickle cells which can replace missing cells
also has langerhans cells, important in phagocytizing micro invaders and helping to stimulate immune system
Granular Layer
Straum Granulosum
3rd deepest layer
actually the middle layer
these cells are in the process of dying
they’re loosing their nuclei and almost stopped producing keratin
these cells contain glycolipids, which waterproofs the skin and help slow water loss
Clear Layer
Stratum Lucidum
2nd layer to the top
these cells are dead and completely keratinized
lack a nucleus and other cell organelles
difficulty seeing this layer, except in the skin of the nose and footpads
Horny Layer
Stratum Corneum
Outermost layer of the epidermis
consists of dead, flattened, and fully keratinized cells
can be several layers thick
1st line of defense against the attack of the environment or infection
