shm Flashcards
Free vibration/ oscillation def
a type of vibration in which a force is applied once and the structure or part is allowed to vibrate at its natural frequency.
Phase difference in radians equation
How many rad is 360 degrees
2 pi rad
Equation linking spring Konstant, w and mass
Equation linking potential energy in SMH with displacement
Light damping def
Light damping occurs when the resistive forces acting are small – many oscillations occur but the time period stays constant as the amplitude falls
Critical damping def
Critical damping is just enough to stop the system oscillating after it has been displaced from equilibrium and released. The oscillating system returns to equilibrium in the shortest amounts of time.
Heavy damping def
a type of damping where the body attains its equilibrium gradually without any oscillation. Example: damper used in doors.
How many energy transfer cycles does one oscillation have
2 cycles
SHM def
Repetitive movement back and forth from an equilibrium position, where acceleration is proportional to and in opposite direction to the displacement.
