Q

What are equipotentials

A
  • Surfaces of constant potential
  • this means that no work needs to be done to move along an equipotential surface
  • on a planet, the further away from the surface, the weaker the gravitational field. This means that, further away from the earth, the equipotentials for equal increases in potentials are spaced further apart.
17
Q

Draw the equipotentials around the earth

A
18
Q

What is a potential gradient at a point in a gravitational field

A

The change of potential per meter at that point

  • near the earths surface, the potential changes by 9.8J/kg for every meter of height gained. So the potential gradient near the surface of the earth is constant and equal to 9.8J/Kg / m
19
Q

What symbol is used to represent gravitational potential in equations

A

V

20
Q

Does it take energy to move between equipotentials?

A

Yes because moving between equipotentials means a change in energy, which means work must be done.

21
Q

22
Q

What is escape velocity

A

How fast you need to be travelling to escape a planets gravity

23
Q

What does escape velocity depend on?
