Q

What is the appropriate approach angle for docking port side to with strong onshore winds with a large amount of windage of the vessel aft?

A

Approach the berth at about 60 degree angle-stop the vessel with the bow across from the mid-ship final spot-drop the offshore anchor-dredge the anchor towards the berth using the engine and port rudder to control the swing of the stern towards the dock. Once A/S back the anchor chain off so it is in the up and down position not blocking the waterway.

Q

What would be the sequence of handling lines and helm commands to bring a vessel off a dock port side too with minimal wind and a head current?

A

Single up lines to a head line and an aft spring-slack the head line while keeping the aft spring tight-the vessel should pivot off the spring line bringing the bow off the berth-a wedge should form between the vessel and the berth bringing the stern slightly away from the berth-come ahead dead slow bringing in the bow line-go all stop-bring in the after spring-come ahead on the engine with appropriate rudder to clear the berth into the current.
