Shelia + Gerald Flashcards
“But these girls aren’t cheap labour - they’re people”
These girls aren’t just a cheap resource, they are people just like everybody else.
“If she’d been some miserable plain little creature, i don’t suppose I’d have done it. But she was very pretty and looked as if she could take care of herself”
They deal with Eva because they feel threatened by her and this ruins their reputation.
“I’ll never, never do it again to anybody.”
She regrets what she did and is not ashamed to reveal this, unlike her parents.
“(Laughs rather hysterically) why - you fool -he knows. Of course he knows. And I hate to think how much he knows that we don’t know yet.”
He knows and has hidden in the shadows but Sheila knows.
“(Eagerly) I know that i’m to blame - and I’m desperately sorry”
She accepts that she is the reason and fully takes responsibility for her actions.
“(Laughs) You seem to be a nice, well behaved family”
He says
“After all, y’know, we’re respectable citizens and not criminal.”
Defending himself and the family. Contrasts to what they really are.
“I hate those hard-eyed dough-faced women”.
Strong opinion about women
“In that case - as I’m rather more - upset - by this business that i probably appear to be - and - well, I’d like to be alone for a while”.
Upset about the situation and wants to be alone.
“Bit how do we know it’s the same girl?”
Questioning.
Dramatic irony.
