What was the Sharpeville Massacre
-Occurred in March 1960 at a police station in Sharpeville, South Africa
-In demonstration against the Pass Laws, 5,000-20,000 protesters went to the police station
-The police opened fire, killing 69 people
What was the aim of the protesters?
-The aim was to get arrested for being in an area without their ‘ID’s’
-The Pass Laws meant Africans had to carry a pass around with them, to prove they are allowed to be in certain areas
What did the National Party do in response?
-Banned the ANC+PAC (members had to meet underground and started secret resistance groups as a result)
-Senior members of the ANC were arrested and trialled for treason
