Shapes Of States Flashcards
Five basic state shape
Compact Proprupted Elongated Fragmented Perforated
How does shape affect communication and conflict
Shape controls how long boundary is
Boundary controls how much communication between states
Compact state
Distance from center to any boundary does not vary significantly
Ideally a circle with capital in center and shortest possible boundaries to defend
Most efficient shape
Compact
Elongated state
Long narrow shape
Potential isolation
Elongate state
Exams of elongate states
Malawi Chile Italy Gambia Panama- after USA with draw from canal
Cons of elongate state (communication)
Poor internal communication
Extreme ends can be isolated from capital
Access or disruption
Prorupted state
Prorupted state
Compact state with large projection
Why are prorupted states created
Give state access to resources like water
Separate two states that otherwise would share a boundary
Example of prorupted sTates
Afghanistan has proruption created to prevent Russia from sharing border with Pakistan
Congo with proruption along Congo river ( the Belgians created this to have access to the Atlantic
Namibia has proruption called capricious strip that disrupted communications of British colonies in Southern Africa
Perforated state
State that completely surrounds another
Example of perforated state
South Africa一Surrounds Lesotho
Senegal — surrounds Gambia ( an elongate state)
Most problematic states
Fragmented states
Fragmented states
Several discontinuous pieces of territory
Two kinds of fragmented states
Separated by water and separated by intervening states
Example of fragmented state separated by water
Tanzania••created as a union of the island Zanzibar with mainland tanganyika
Indonesia •• many islands across Indian and Pacific Oceans although most people love on java and Sumatra
Example of state separated by intervening state
Angola- divided by Congo proruption
Cabinda is trying to detach from Angola
Russia- has a fragment called Kaliningrad separated by Lithuania and Belarus
Panama- divided by a canal(USA) for most of 20th century
After USA left canal, panama becomes an elongate state
India’s tin bigha corridor -tiny strip of land that fragments Dahagram and angarpota from Bangladesh (India Nad Bangladesh agree to open tin bigha to both people between Dawna and dusk)
Kalingrad
Fragment of Russia
Cabinda
Trying to separate from Angola
Tin bigha
Part of India that fragments Bangladesh
Landlocked states
Lacks direct outlet to sea because it is surrounded by other countries
Examples of countries are landlocked
Lesotho surrounded by southa Africa
14 out of 54 states in Africa
Why are seaports so important
Facilitates international trade
Bulky goods like petroleum, grain, ore, vehicles are transported long distances by ship-
How do landlocked states get goods by sea,
arrange to use another countries seaport
