Shapes of molecules Flashcards
What is a linear molecules bond angle?
180 degrees
What is a trigonal planar molecules bond angle?
120 degrees
What is a tetrahedral molecules bond angle?
109.5 degrees
What is a trigonal bipyramidal molecules bond angle?
120 degrees and 90 degrees
What is an octahedral molecules bond angle?
90 degrees
What is a pyramidal molecules bond angle?
107 degrees
What is a non-linear molecules bond angle?
104.5 degrees
How do you identify a linear molecule?
2 bonding pairs with no lone pairs
How do you identify a trigonal bipyramidal molecule?
5 bonding pairs with no lone pairs
How do you identify an octahedral molecule?
6 bonding pairs with no lone pairs
How do you identify a trigonal bipyramidal molecule?
5 bonding pairs with no lone pairs
What does a wedge mean in a diagram?
The element is going towards me
How do you identify a pyramidal molecule?
3 bonding pairs with 1 lone pair
How do you identify a non-linear molecule?
2 bonding pairs with 2 lone pairs
What does a dashed wedge mean in a diagram?
The element is going away from me (into the paper)
What is the affect of the lone pairs on the bonding pairs and the bonding angle?
The lone pairs repel the bond pairs more than the bond pairs repel each other, making the different shapes and reducing the bonding angle. For every lone pair the bonding angle decreases by 2.5 degrees
