Electron shells Flashcards
What is a shell made up of?
sub-shells and orbitals
What is the alternative name for shell?
energy level
How many electrons can an orbital hold maximum?
2
What shape is an s-shell?
spherical
What shapes are a p-shell?
an infinity sign on the x-axis, y-axis and diagonal
What is in the 1st shell?
1 s-orbital
1 s-sub-shell
What is in the 2nd shell?
1 s-orbital
1 s-sub-shell
3 p-orbital
1 p-sub-shell
What is in the 3rd shell?
1 s-orbital 1 s-sub-shell 3 p-orbital 1 p-sub-shell 5 d - orbital 1 d- sub-shell
What is electronegativity?
The power or ability of an atom to attract a shared pair of electrons in a covalent towards itself
What is the effect on electronegativity when you go across the period?
The electronegativity increases
What is the effect on electronegativity when you go down the group?
They electronegativity decreases
Why does the change happen to electronegativity when you go across the period?
- The positive charge in the nucleus charge increases and there isn’t any significant change in the shielding
- The radius of the atom gets smaller
Why does the change happen to electronegativity when you go down a group?
-The nucleus charge increases but there is a large change in the shielding so the electrostatic attraction is smaller
