Definitions Flashcards
What is the definition of an isotope?
An atom with the same number of protons and electrons but a different number of neutrons
What is the definition of relative atomic mass?
The weighted mean mass of atoms of an element relative to 1/12 the mass of an atom of C-12 which has a mass of exactly 12
What is the definition of relative isotopic mass?
The mass of an atom of an isotope of an element relative to C-12
What is the definition of relative molecular mass?
The mass of a molecule of a compound relative to 1/12 of an atom of C-12 (has to do with non-metal bonding)
What is the definition of relative formula mass?
The mass of the formula of a compound relative to 1/12 of an atom of C-12
What is the first ionisation energy?
the energy required to remove one electron from each atom in one mole of gaseous atoms
What is electronegativity?
The ability or power of an atom to attract a pair of shared electrons in a covalent bond to itself
What is an ionic bond?
An electrostatic bond between 2 oppositely charged ion
What is a covalent bond?
A bond where a pair of electrons is shared between 2 non-metals
What is a metallic bond?
An electrostatic bond between positive metallic ions and a sea of delocalised electrons
What is a dipole?
A molecule that has regions of slight charge
Describe the structure of a lattice
A regular arangement of alternating positive and negative ions
