Shapes of molecules Flashcards
what are bonding pairs?
the two shared electrons in a covalent bond
what are lone pairs?
two electrons in a pair not involved in bonding (also known as non-bonding pairs)
what is the shape of a molecule dependent on?
the number of electron pairs which repel each other as far as possible
how to electron pairs behave with each other in a molecule?
they repel each other as far as possible
why do lone pairs repel more than bonding pairs?
they are more compact
how do lone pairs affect the bond angles?
reduce to a small extent (approx 2.5 degrees)
