What is a chord?
the line that goes from edge to edge in a circle (Not through the middle)
What is a arc?
A curved line
What is a tangent?
A line that touches the outside of the circle in one place.

What is a polygon?
A shape made out of straight edges (no curves)
What do you call polygon with four sides?
Quadrilateral
What is a regular polygon?
One where all the sides are the same length and all the angles are the same size
What is perimeter?
How do you work it out?
What are the units?
It is the distance around the shape
You add up the lengths of all of the sides. It’s useful to mark a corner to start at and don forget to work out any sides that aren’t given.
Units… mm, cm, m, km, Inches, feet, yard, miles
How do you fined the area of a random shape?
Count the squares ( put half or part squares together)
How do you work out the area of a rectangle?
Length X width
How do you work out the area of a square ?
Length X length
How do you fined the area of a complicated shape?
Split it into shapes that you know and add their areas together
Or work out the area for a bigger shape then take bits away
How do you work out the area of a triangle?
Base X height then divide by 2
The base doesn’t have to be at the bottom
The height is at right angle to the base

The height must be at right angle to the base

Length X length

Length X width

Base X (perpendicular) height divide by 2 Do not use the sloping side

The sum of the parallel sides X the height divided by 2
You get the formular in the exam

Radius X radius X pi (3.14…)
What dose perpendicular mean?
Lines that meet or cross and right angles
How do you work out the area of a complicated shape?
Split into shapes that you do know and work out the area for each one then add the answers together
How do you work out the surface area of a object?
Individually work out the area of each face of the shape and then add the answers together
Units are square units (not cubed units)
It helps to name the faces eg a cuboid has a front and back, top and bottom, side and side
How do you work out the circumference of a circle?
Diameter X 3.14 (pi)

You work out the area of the end then times it by how long it is
