Use shampoo and conditioner suitable for condition of client’s hair. (Eg. damaged, colour treated)
-Scalp Condition Use products appropriate for scalp condition. (Eg. anti dandruff or sensitive shampoo)
-Product Build-Up
Can use clarifying shampoo.
Hair Porosity “-Use lighter products for low porosity hair so as not to weigh it down
Use richer products for high porosity hair to hydrate it.”
Identify four shampooing massage movements and their benefits.
Effleurage
-a gentle, stroking movement performed with the pads of the fingers or palms in a sweeping motion across the scalp.
-encourages relaxation, blood circulation and lymph flow
Petrissge
-involves gently pushing and kneading the scalp with the Palms fingers and thumbs of the hand.
-stimulates hair follicles, increases blood flow, and helps alleviate tension in the scalp.
Tapotement
-uses light tapping movements with the fingertips over the scalp.
improves blood flow, relieves muscle tension, and energises the scalp.
Describe the effect of hot and cold water on the hair and when this can be beneficial.
Hot water
-opens the hair cuticle, which makes it easier to remove dirt, oil, and product buildup from the scalp.
Cold water
-closes the cuticle, sealing in moisture and adding shine to the hair.
Beneficial to wash hair with hot water as it ensures thorough cleaning , then rinse with cold water as it helps make the hair smoother and shinier.
Identify the range of shampoos and conditioning products available for different hair types and condition.
For Dry Hair: Moisturising shampoos and conditioners with hydrating ingredients like oils, glycerin, or aloe vera.
For Oily Hair: Clarifying shampoos and lightweight conditioners designed to remove excess oil without adding weight.
For Damaged Hair: Repairing shampoos and conditioners with proteins or keratin to strengthen and restore the hair structure.
For Coloured Hair: Colour-protecting products with UV filters and sulfate-free formulas to preserve vibrancy and prevent fading.
For Normal Hair: Gentle shampoos and conditioners to maintain balance and overall hair health.
For Sensitive Scalps: Hypoallergenic and soothing products with minimal fragrances and natural ingredients.
What are the effects of using the wrong shampoo or conditioner?
It can worsen already existing issues with the hair and scalp.
For example:
-a clarifying shampoo on dry hair can strip natural oils, causing brittleness and breakage.
-heavy conditioners on oily hair can weigh it down, making it look greasy.
-using unsuitable products on coloured hair may lead to colour fading or damage.
Identify the language most commonly used with shampooing, conditioning and treating the scalp.
Revitalise: Restores strength and vitality (energising).
Replenish: Restores lost moisture and nutrients (restorative).
Nourish: Provides ongoing nutrients for hair health (strengthening).
Detox: Cleanses deeply to remove buildup and toxins (purifying).
Cleanse: Removes dirt, oil, and impurities from the hair and scalp (clearing).
Hydrate: Adds moisture to improve softness. (moisturising).
Describe how the PH of a product affects the hair.
Hair is naturally acidic, around 3.5-4.5 pH. Hair is healthiest when it’s in its natural, semi-acidic state, so using products that maintain this is important.
The pH of a product affects the hair’s cuticle and health.
-Acidic products (pH 3.5–5.5) smooth and seal the cuticle, which improves it’s shine and strength.
-Neutral products (pH 7) are mild but can still disrupt the balance if used for a long time.
-Alkaline products (pH 8+) open the cuticle for treatments but can cause dryness and damage if overused.
