- has no purpose
- not everyone has it
- inner most layer
- found more in coarse hair, not so much in fine

PH scale
A
- PH means Potential Hydrogen
- degree of acidity or alkalinity
- typical scale is 0-14
- neutral is 7
- 0-7 is acid
- 7-14 is alkalin
- healthy PH -> 4.5-5.5
- ammonia opens cuticle, acid closes

- cape up client-> is collar, tuck into shirt
- use sanex strip for sanitation
- make sure cape is secure
- make sure cape is over back of shampoo bowl
- stand behind client and shampoo bowl
