What is shaken baby syndrome?
Brain trauma characterized by shearing forces that tear blood vessels and neurons
What is the incidence of shaken baby syndrome?
Leading cause of death as a result of physical abuse occurring in children < 2
3rd month of life is the peak incidence
What are the common clinical manifestations of shaken baby syndrome?
Vomiting, irritability, poor feeding and listlessness
What are the severe clinical manifestations of shaken baby syndrome?
Seizures, posturing, altered LOC, apnea, respiratory problems
What education is needed for parents regarding SBS & crying?
Peak of crying at 2 months
Unexpected crying will come and go
Resists soothing; baby will cry no matter what at times Pain-Like face; baby will appear in pain when crying Long lasting crying for up to 5 hours throughout day Evening crying is common
How should SBS be managed by the nurse?
ABCs, monitor child’s LOC, nonjudgmental attitude & focus on child medical needs
Who will likely be involved in the investigation of a SBS case?
Law enforcement and CPS
