What is a crisis?
Crisis Intervention
Acute disruption of normal psychological homeostasis due to failed coping mechanisms
What do outcomes of crisis depend on?
Perception of event, adequate support, adequate coping mechanisms
What is characteristic of maturational or developmental crisis?
New development stage is reached, old coping skills no longer work, anxiety increases
What is characteristic of situational crisis?
Arise from events that are extraordinary, external, and unanticipated
What is characteristic of adventitious crisis?
Natural disaster & violent crimes
What happens in phase 1 of crisis?
Conflict or problem occurs & attempt to use coping skills to resolve conflict
What happens in phase 2 of crisis?
Defense mechanisms fail, anxiety increases, begin to use trial & error to solve problem
What happens in phase 3 of crisis?
Trial and error fails & anxiety becomes severe
What happens in phase 4 of crisis?
Depression, confusion, violence, and suicidal thoughts may occur
What are the primary care interventions for crisis?
Promote mental health to decrease incidence of crisis (educate on potential problems)
What is secondary care for crisis?
Patient safety and prevention of prolonged anxiety
What is tertiary care for crisis?
Experienced a severe crisis and are now recovering (Critical incident stress debriefing (CISD))
