SGLT2 inhibitors Flashcards

1
Q

where are SGLT2 proteins expressed

A

PROXIMAL renal tubule**

note: is responsible for the reabsorption of filtered glucose, by inhibiting SGLT2 these drugs REDUCE REABSORPTION* of glucose and INCREASE URINARY EXCRETION*, which decreases BG

Q

SGLT2i drug interactions

A

increased risk of intravascular volume depletion (causing HYPOTENSION* and AKI) if used in combination with DIURETICS, RAAS inhibitors, NSAIDs**

Q

SGLT2i can cause (warnings)

A
  1. Ketoacidosis* (stop prior to surgery to reduce risk)
  2. hypOtension* and AKI (due to intravascular VOLUME DEPLETION*)
  3. severe UTIs and genital fungal infections* (genital mycotic infections, UROSEPSIS and PYELONEPHRITIS, necrotizing fascitis/perineum)
  4. canagliflozin and bexagliflozin: increased risk of amputation (avoid if foot problems, neuropathy), risk of FRACTURES*
