SGA Theory Flashcards
What are the supraglottic airways approved by the Provincial Medical Advisory Council (MAC)?
- King Larangeal Tube (King LT)
- Larangeal Mask Airway (LMA)
Where does the LMA stop?
The LMA stops at the epiglottis.
Where does the King LT extend to?
The King LT extends into the esophagus.
Where do airway obstructions often occur?
The larynx
What are common airway problems?
- Laryngeal foreign body obstruction
- Epiglottitis
- Edema secondary to: Burns/chemicals, allergic reactions
- Trauma with bleeding/swelling
How long should we pre-oxygenate before attempting first SGA insertion?
30-60 seconds with 100% O2.
How long do we have for each SGA insertion attempt?
30 seconds.
What do we do if 2nd SGA insertion attempt fails?
Stop trying, revert to BVM and pharyngeal airway management.
What do you do if the pt vomits with an SGA inserted?
Deflate the cuff, remove the SGA, suction to clear the airway, and then either reinsert the SGA or use alternate methods to manage the airway depending on skill level.
What height pt is a yellow (size 3) King LT for?
4-5’ tall.
What height pt is a red (size 4) King LT for?
5-6’ tall.
What height pt is a purple (size 5) King LT for?
6’+
How much air does it take to inflate an LMA?
20-40 mLs depending on the size used.
Where does the King LT seal?
The proximal cuff seals the oropharynx, the distal cuff seals the esophagus.
