SG Aquaculture, Aquaponics & Hydroponics Flashcards
Aquaculture
The breeding, rearing, and harvesting of fish and other type of water organisms
Aquaponics
A food production program that combines aquaculture and hydroponics
Hydroponics
Growing plants in sand, gravel, or liquid with added nutrients but without nutrients
What fish are usually grown?
Tilapia
Sturgeon for caverior
Giant Gourami : breathe air, which makes it easy of our power goes our or even if we have low aeration happening, can function on vegetarian diet
Why is that fish easier to grow than others?
They are easy to take care of and they can withstand a lot of different water qualities. Fry can eat the same amount of food as tilapia and is simple to feed.
What are fry?
A recently hatched fish
Fingerlings
A fingerling is a babyish, the size of a finger
fast do fry grow
very fast
often do they eat
Very often and don’t let it go to waste. Every 2-3 hours
What’s the ideal temperature range for them?
70-85 degrees Farenheit
What animal would not work well?
Fish that needs a lot of attention and grows very large
What vegetables are usually grown in hydroponics?
Lettuce, onion, kalo, tai, basil, hawaiian herbs and plants, cilantro, green onion
Do plants grow faster in aquaponics and hydroponics?
Yes
What is an important maintenance task
Weekly water changes, daily checking water quality, everything we do in lab
What do they test the water for?
pH levels, ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate
pH balance
5.00 to 10.00, how acidic something is
ammonia
Anything below 3. 4, a gas that is toxic in high levels
ntitrite and nitrate
Nitrite should be below 1 ppm, nitrate anything greater than 80 is toxic, byproducts of organic waste breaking down
temp affect system
The higher the temperature, the faster the growth rate because more oxygen is being required
Is there a use for dirty water from the fish?
Circulates through the tank
Why are nitrifying bacteria important?
They convert ammonia to nitrate
How does the nitrogen cycle work in freshwater?
Fish eat the food and produce waste, which is broken down and converted into food again
Importance for Hawaii?
Living off of aina, connecting back to ancestral roots and cultural identity. Connects with the dirt ( land). Teaches sustainability, we consume less chemicals. Is a stress reliever for those who maintain it.
