16 SG: Human Impacts on Ocean Flashcards
Habitat Destruction
Effected via drilling, mining, dredging for aggregates, destructive anchoring, or removal of corals
Carbon Emessions
- Humans have increased carbon dioxide in the atmosphere to levels that have caused Ocean acidification and Ocean warming
Chemical Pollution
- Effects animals via ingestion, long term, or changes to reproduction cycle
Oil Spills
- Oil spills smother plant and animal life
Light Pollution
- Comes from artificial lights from boats, offshore mining platforms, and costal cities
Sea turtles
Noise Pollution
- Underwater noise from construction, shipping and naval vessels significantly impacts the natural behaviour of cetacean
Plastic pollution
- 100s of millions of plastics, still experiencing the effects and many years to come
Overfishing
factory fishing has destroyed local fish stocks, leaving too few adults to breed for the future
Destructive Fishing
-
damage the environment by dredging the seabed or catching other species that are thrown back dead
Surface runoff
harmful chemicals easily flowing into rivers or directly into the Ocean
Deoxygenation
- Increase in fertilisers for agriculture and warming ocean waters has contributed to eutrophication
Deep Sea Mining
- Newer issue facing the ocean , destroys habitats
Microbead Ban
- Plastic microbeads have been banned, so they can’t enter oceans food chains
Circular economy
- More materials are reused, shared, repaired, refurbished, remanufactured and recycled
Marine Protected Areas
- Habitats and fish populations are more protected
Banning single use plastics
Single use plastic like straws, cotton buds, etc., create less waste that would of ended up in the ocean
Sustainable fishing
- MSC certified sustainable seafood reached one million tonnes for the first time and demand for sustainable fish was on the increase
Ocean habitat restoration
- Mangroves and seagroves are being restored around the world to bring back habitats and welcome back species
