Contraception: Abstinence
Abstaining from having sexual intercourse eliminates the possibility of sperm entering the vagina.
Coitus interruptus (withdrawal)
Withdrawal of penis from vagina during sexual intercourse prior to ejaculation.
Calendar rhythm method
Determining fertile days by tracking menstrual cycle to estimate the time of ovulation which occurs about 14 days before the onset of the next menstrual cycle.
Basal body temperature (BBT)
The temperature of the body at rest. During ovulation as the progesterone raises some clients may see a slight elevation in their basal body temperature identifying the time of ovulation is a symptom-based method that can be used to facilitate or avoid conception.
Cervical mucus ovulation detection method
A.k.a. Billing’s method. Is a symptom based method in which the client analyzes cervical mucous to determine ovulation.
Penile condom
A thin sheath used to cover the penis during sexual intercourse as a contraceptive or as a protection against infection.
Client Education for penile condom:
- Place a condom on the erect penis, leaving an empty space at the tip for a sperm reservoir.
-Following ejaculation, withdraw the penis from the vagina while holding the rim of the condom to prevent any semen spillage to the vulva or vaginal area.
Vaginal condom
Vaginal sheath made of nitrile, a non latex synthetic rubber with flexible rings on both ends that is pre-lubricated with spermicide.
Client Education for vaginal condom
The condom is removed and thrown away after each act of intercourse. Do not use in conjunction with a penile condom.
Human Papillomavirus HPV treatment?
HPV has no cure, warts can be frozen off. HPV vaccine to prevent infection.
Genital Herpes (HSV) treatment?
Zovirax (acyclovir) an antiviral, reduces the length of herpes outbreaks. Topical for treatment of cold sores.
Chlamydia treatment?
Reportable, treated with antibiotics doxycycline, azithromycin, levofloxacin
Gonorrhea treatment?
Reportable, treatment dual-therapy antibiotics: azithromycin, ceftriaxone, and gentamicin (teratogenic, ototoxicity; nephrotixicity)
Syphilis treatment?
Antibiotics: doxycycline or tetracycline
-benzathine penicillin
(BV) Bacterial Vaginosis treatment?
Oral or antibiotics metronidazole; clindamycin
Tetracyclines (tetracycline, doxycycline, minocycline) mechanism of action:
Kills gram-negative bacteria used for treatment of chlamydia & syphilis (permanent teeth discoloration)
