Within 6th form attitudes towards homosexuality have changed- especially views of straight boys. people are more accepting and more educated. He also suggests that it is important that teachers improve their attitudes towards homosexuality in order to educate people.

there are expectations that go along with being homosexual- these being effeminate mannerisms, high pitched voice… ext. When a male has accepted his identity and has accepted his homosexual label he will start to fulfil the characteristic and conform to the stereotype.

compulsory heterosexuality = women are socialised into the subordinate role ensuring availability to men- lesbians are seen as more abnormal since its a threat to male dominance.

dominant sexual codes and socialisation into sexuality - being gay is making a statement, being straight doesn’t have the same effect. Points out how you wouldn’t say “I’m straight” but “I’m gay/lesbian” makes a statement about belonging.

Homosexual career: once a male has accepted his homosexual label he will start to show stereotypical characteristics in subcultures. homosexuality is a process- homosexual subcultures seek each other out. stereotypical traits become the norm.
