Sexual Selection & Human Reproductive Behaviour Flashcards
The Evolutionary Approach
According to Darwin’s (1859) theory of evolution, natural selection influences the way that species change over time and become better adapted to their environment.
Characteristics maximise an individuals ability to survive and reproduce and are highly adaptive.
Types of Selection
Natural Selection
Sexual Selection
Sexual Selection (Competition for mates)
The ability to attract a mate and reproduce successfully
Natural Selection
The ability to survive in a particular environment (fitness)
Sexual Dimorphism
Males have characteristics that serve to attract females, suggesting that males are competing for the attention of females and the females choose the male.
Types of Sexual Selection
Intra-Sexual Selection
Inter-Sexual Selection
Intra-Sexual Selection (competition)
Males compete with each other for ‘access’ to members of the opposite sex.
Inter-Sexual Selection (choice)
Females choose members of the opposite sex who possess certain qualities
Anisogamy
Refers to the differences between males and females, eg. different sex cells. As a result of Anisogamy there is a difference in the level of investment in reproduction.
