sexual selection and human reproductive behaviour Flashcards
what is sexual selection?
evolutionary explanation. of partner preference, behaviours tat increase reproductive success are passed on ad may become exaggerate over succeeding generations of offspring
what is anisogamy?
how are male and female gamete different?
whats one consequence of anisogamy?
why is anisogamy important in partner preference?|
- the basis of human reproductive behav., difference between male and female sex cells (gametes)
male = created continuously in vast numbers, don’t require much energy
female = proceed in intervals, for a limited number of years
- theres no shortage of fertile males but there is women as their a rarer ‘resource’
- gives rise to two types of sexual selection
what are the 2 types of sexual selection?
1 - inter sexual selection = BETWEEN the sexes, the strategy they se to select each other
2- intra sexual selection = WITHIN each sex, such as competition between males to be selected
- inter is prefered by women, quality over quantity
- intra is preferred by men, quantity over quality

✅evolutionary explanations of mate preference also emphasise the differences in what males and females look for in a potential partner. This exaggeration of the differences between the genders is known as an alpha bias, and the differences between males and females may be overstated. It is plausible to argue that males and females actually look for similar characteristics, such as loyalty and kindness, and such characteristics are not reported in the research, which tends to look for clear differences.
❌evolutionary explanations is that it is a retrospective approach, largely based on speculations about what may or may not have been evolutionarily adaptive for our ancestors. There is no reliable way to check whether these suggestions are true
