factors affecting attraction Flashcards
what are the 3 factors effecting attraction?
1️⃣ physical attractiveness
2️⃣ filter theory
3️⃣ self disclosure
1️⃣ PHYSCIAL ATTRACTION
what did shackleford and Larsen say mad someone more attractive?
what are neotenous features? examples
why do ppl find these features attractive?
- having a symmetrical face
- baby face like such as big eyes, small nose, clear skin
- bc they trigger protective and caring instincts
1️⃣ PHYSCIAL ATTRACTION
what is the halo effect?
example fo the halo effect?
- our perception of someone is positively influenced by our opinions of that person’s other related traits.
- the attractiveness stereotype, which refers to the tendency to assign positive qualities and traits to physically attractive people. People often tend to judge attractive individuals to have higher morality, better mental health, and greater intelligence.
1️⃣ PHYSCIAL ATTRACTION
what is the matching hypothesis?
why do ppl do this?
- we cant all form reships with the most attracted ppl since there isnt enough so ppl find partners of a similar attracvtiness to themselves
- to avoid being rejected by someone they perceive to be out of their league
2️⃣ FILTER THEORY:
what it and who came up with it?
what are the 3 filters?
- idea that 3 different filters contribute to a field of desirabilitys in a partner, introduced by Kerckhoff and Davis
1- social demography
2- similarity in attitudes
3- complementarity
2️⃣ FILTER THEORY - social demography:
what is social demography? give 3 examples
who are we. here likely to form a ship with?
- factors that info once the chances of potential partners meeting in the first place such as proximity, social class and level of education
- someone in close proximity who is accessible and have social and cultural similarities to us as they have something in common
2️⃣ FILTER THEORY - similarity in attitudes:
what do partners often share?
when did Byrne say this way important|?
how is the presence or absence of similarities found?
- important beliefs bc of the ‘field of availables’ - this is important in order for the ship to develop
- within the early stages of the ship , before 18 months
- through self disclosure
2️⃣ FILTER THEORY - complementarity:
what does this refer to?
what does it do?
example?
- having some traits that the other partner lacks
- helps each other fulfil their need
- one partner may have loads of confident and the other may need someone to help bring therm out of their shell and then there fine
3️⃣ SELF DISCLOSURE:
what is this?
what sort of info do ppl discloses?
what are the 3 types?
- revealing personal info to a partner
- low risk info such as fears and hopes, likes and dislikes
1- social penetration theory
2- breadth and depth of SD
3- reciprocity of SD
3️⃣ SELF DISCLOSURE - social penetration:
what does it involves?
what does their need to be a reciprocal exchange of? why?
- revealing your inner self and deep feelings
- sensitive info as it allows each other to understand each other better and get closer
3️⃣ SELF DISCLOSURE - breadth and depth of SD:
what happens ads breadth and depth increase?
what kind of info do we SD at the start of a ship?
what happens then as the ship develops?
why shouldn’t you reveal too much info at the start?
- partners become more committed to each other
- low risk info that we could tell anyone
- more high risk info gets disclosed such aa trauma
- may jeaprodsie the chance of growth for the ship
3️⃣ SELF DISCLOSURE - reciprocity of SD:
what needs to happen after one partner shares high risk info?
what does this balance create?
- other partner needs too repaid positively , showing empathy and understanding and disclosing their now high risk info
- creates a sense of trust and comfort which will allow the ship to grow and be successful
