Sexual selection Flashcards
Definition
Selecting characteristics for reproductive success
Aim
Produce healthy children who go on to have reproductive success themselves
Male reproductive behaviour
Strategy= maximise no. possible couplings as produce lots of sperm over long period of time- potentially fertilise many females but never sure of paternity. Lead to intrasexual competition and polygamy
Female reproductive behaviour
Best strategy= indulge in intersexual competition- choose partners who advertise genetic fitness. This is because produced fewer eggs over shorter time and sure of maternity. Leads to courtship rituals- investment of time and resources increases prob. won’t desert.
