Main proposition
Similarity promotes liking
Stages in relationship formation
- People sort potential partners for dissimilarity to themselves
- Out of the remaining partners people chose someone most similar to themselves
2 factors that having similarity in is most likely to promote relationship formation
- Personality- most attracted to similar traits (esp long term relationships)
- Attitues- attitude alignment-modify behaviours to become similar
Dissimiliarity is more important
Rosenbaum- Disimilarity-repulsion hypothesis- Singapore and US- participants first attracted to similarities but dissimilarity then became the best indicator of relationship formation- those with highest levels least likely to form,
Reductionism
Research into similarity has only dealt with attitude and personality. Narrow view- similar self concept, economic level and physical condition- Speakman- choose partners with similar levels of body fat
Research support
Lehr and Geher- Lab exp- 50 students given description of a stranger with varying degrees of attitude similarity to their own. Also statement whether stranger liked participant. DV= measure of liking-likelihood of dating. Liked more when attitudes similar and liked by person= rewarding knowing someone likes you so you like them.
