Sexual Selection Flashcards
Sexual Selection
Favours selection of traits that influence mating success of an individual
↪ Remember individuals that reproduce are the ones that actually contribute to the gene pool
There are two major forms: Intersexual and Intrasexual
Intersexual Selection
→ Males compete with their traits to by chosen by a female
↪ Females choose mates based on physical traits (like coloration) or behavioral traits (like songs or dances)
→ Produces traits beneficial for mating but possible detrimental otherwise.
↪ A peacocks tail decrease the chance of survival but is needed for reproductive success
→ Many species evolved with a compromise between the different selective pressures
Intrasexual Selection
Males compete with other males aggressively for access to the female
↪ Males with best fighting technique, largest body size and largest “weapons” will have a way higher chance of winning than biologically inferior males.
