Sexual Reproduction I Flashcards
What is reproduction?
It is a biological process by which new organisms are being produced by their parents.
Why do living things reproduce?
It is to ensure that their species will not go extinct.
What is the difference between sexual and asexual?
Asexual reproduction does not involve sex cells or fertilisation . Only one parent is required, unlike sexual reproduction which needs two parents. … As a result, the offspring are genetically identical to the parent and to each other.
Sexual reproduction requires 2 parents and has to have fertilisation to occur.
What are the parts in the Male Reproductive System?
Urethra, Penis, Sex Gland/Prostate gland, scrotum, sperm duct, epididymis.
What is the function of the penis?
Deposits sperm into the woman’s vagina during sexual intercourse. Allows urine to leave the body.
What is the function of the urethra?
Transport urine and semen to outside of penis. Note, urine and semen don’t mix.
Is sperm and semen the same?
No. Sperm is being produced by the testis, but semen is sperm and fluid from the sex gland/prostate gland.
What is the function of testis?
Produce sperms and sex hormones called testosterone.
What is the function of the scrotum?
Holds testis outside the body to provide lower temperature for development of sperms.
What is the function of the sex gland?
Produce fluids that mix with sperms to form semen. Provides lubricating effect to help sperm move better.
What is the function of the Epididymis?
Stores sperm and bring sperms to maturity.
What are the parts of an female reproductive system?
Vagina, Cervix, Uterus, Fallopian Tube, Ovaries.
What is the function of the Vagina?
A muscular passage which connects to the uterus that allows the deposit of sperms. A passage which a baby is born.
What is the function of the Cervix?
helps keep unhealthy things out of your body. A narrow opening of the uterus which becomes wider during birth process.
What is the function of the uterus/ womb?
An organ that allows implantation of embryo and nourishes the growth of the foetus. Contracts when baby is about to be born.
Where does implantation take place?
Uterus/womb.
What is the function of the fallopian tube?
Transport eggs from ovaries to uterus. The site where fertilization takes place.
What is the function of the ovary?
Produces female eggs and female sex hormones (oestrogen and progesterone).
What is the difference between sperm and egg?
1) Egg is the largest cell in the human body. Sperm is the smallest cell in the human body.
2) The sperm has a head, body and tail. The egg is just a cell which contains nucleus.
What is the similarity between sperms and egg?
Both are used for reproduction, both have the same number of chromosomes, and both are produced by the same process of gamete formation (the formation of sex cells).
How many chromosomes does a zygote have?
46 pairs of chromosomes.
Why does a zygote have 46 pair of chromosomes?
It is because a sperm contains 23 chromosomes and the egg also contains 23 chromosomes. When fuse, it would be combine together. Hence, 46 pairs of chromosomes.
The male gamete is the sperm while the female reproductive cell is the egg. True or false?
True, gemete is also known as sex cell.
What is abortion?
It is the deliberate termination of the foetus/ embryo from the uterus.
