What are the three levels of severity in sexual assault
- Simple sexual assault
- Sexual assault with a weapon or causing bodily harm
- Aggravated sexual assault
Define simple sexual assault
i. Any sexual contact that is unsolicited/non-consensual

i. Includes gang rape
ii. Bodily harm -> non-permanent type
Define Aggravated sexual assault
i. The person’s life is in danger
ii. Permanent injury to victim
What are two general consequences to victims of sexual assault?
Rape trauma syndrome
PTSD
Define Rape trauma syndrome
i. Group of symptoms and behaviours that are frequent after-effects of having been raped
What are the two stages of after effects for rape trauma syndrome
- Acute Phase (several days to weeks)
a. Depression, self blame, anxiety, high fear, increased distrust, self doubt - Long Term Reaction Phase (several weeks to several years)
a. Development of phobias, sexual problems, depression
How long can PTSD last after the effect?
i. 60% have it for one month
ii. 47% have it for one year
iii. 16% have 15 years later
Define a voyeur
i. Obtain gratification by observing unsuspecting people who are either naked, undressing, or having sex
Define a rapist
i. Person who sexually assaults people over the age of 16
Define a pedophile
i. Person whose primary orientation is toward young children
Define intra-familial child molesters
- Sexually abuse their own biological children for or for whom they assume a parental role
Define extra-familial child molesters
- Sexually abuse children that they are not related to
