what is sex role sterotyping?
A
set of beliefs or preconceived ideas about what is appropriate for males and females in a society

A
male= hates shopping, commitment phobic
female= loves shopping, cries at sad films

when and how do you acquire sex role sterotypes?
A
- 3-4 years, preschool age
- interacting with environment
- primary + secondary socialisation

what practical applications is there?
A
- suggests sterotyping is learned
- has prac apps, suggestion of unlearned we can address negative sterotypes to change way children are socialised
- Disney eg Mulan- less sterotypical models
- process of unlearning not easy- historically engrained in society

how is the research outdated?
A
- society is changing and modern research may not replicate same findings regarding learning of sterotypes
- lacks temporal validity

what supporting research is there?
A
Seavey (1975)
- told 1/3 adult p’s that a 3 month old baby dressed in yellow jumpsuit was a boy/girl/not reveal gender.
- left to play with baby in room with ball (boy), doll (girl) and plastic ring (neutral).
- adults sterotype as young as 3 months old- reinforce it.
