biological theory- atypical sex chromosomes Flashcards
1
Q
background info for Klinefelters syndrome?
A
- 1 in 600 males, random at contraception
- XXY chromosome
- supectible to health issues like breast cancer, low sperm= infertile
2
Q
what is the chromosome pattern for Klinefelters syndrome?
A
XXY
3
Q
physical characteristics of Klinefelters?
A
- breast development
- long gangly limbs
- lack of body hair
- clumsiness
- underdeveloped genitals
4
Q
mental/ cognitive characteristics of Klinefelters?
A
- poor memory
- shy
- lacks sexual activity interest
- poorly developed reading ability
5
Q
background info for Turners syndrome?
A
- 1 in 5000 women
- XO chromosome
- random at contraception- random error
6
Q
what is the chromosome pattern for Turners syndrome?
A
XO
7
Q
physical characteristics for Turners syndrome?
A
- webbed neck
- broad chest
- physically immature
-no menstrual cycles= infertile - resricted height
8
Q
mental/cognitive characteristics for Turners syndrome?
A
- hgiher than average reading ability
- poor at maths
- socially immature
- difficulty fitting in
- trouble relating to peers
9
Q
A03
what positive contribtution does this have to the nature nurture debate?
A
- helps us identify what behavioural/personality differences there are between biological typical males and abnormal males (XXY)
- infer only diff is nature, specifically the chromosomes eg Turners= better reading
Counter-> nurture factors can affect development of behaviour eg coddled by family= immature/curriculum at school
10
Q
A03
what practical application is there?
A
- led to treatments which can be effective at managing some of symtpoms of Turners and Klinfelters
- eg testoerone gel to help with hair growth
- studying them adds real world value
11
Q
A03
how is it a small sample?
A
- only 1/3 people with Klinefelters are aware they have condition, fewer will been part of research
- in order to identify characteristics of syndrome, need to identify large number of individuals w disorder
- only those with most severe symptoms identifed= picture distorted
- suggests typical picture may be exaggerated
