Sex Linked Traits Flashcards
What is Autosomal inheritance
Autosome refers to all the chromosomes except the sex chromosome
Autosomal inheritance refers to a allele which is expressed on the 22 chromosomes pits and not the sex chromosome
Female chromosomes
XX Chromosomes
Male chromosomes
XY
* Male sex chromosome is the only chromosome pair that isn’t homologous
Sex linked
An allele found the the sex chromosome (X OR Y), and expression is based on gender
X linked traits
*Refers to how traits or disorder on the X chromosome are expressed
* If a male receives a X chromosome that carries a recessive allele for a disorder they’ll have the disorder, because they only have 1 X chromosome.
*Whereas females if they receive a X chromosome that carries a recessive allele for a disorder. They’ll just be carriers because they have a second unaffected X chromosome, which mask the recessive chromosome. But if they both have the recessive alleles then they’ll be affected
Hemophilia
When you are cut, the blood doesn’t clot because not enough blood clotting proteins are present or non functional
Y linked traits
Only males can pass on these traits as they are only found in Y chromosomes, which is the chromosome males give
Since only males have Y chromosomes, they are the only ones affected
X linked traits (disorders)
*Traits that are expressed only in the X chromosome
*Males are usually more affected as it only takes ome X chromosome to become affected
* women are usually carriers as then have two X chromosome, and the unaffected one mask the affected one
