Sex and Relationships Flashcards
Psychologist Carl Rogers described three conditions that characterize healthy relationships
genuineness, empathy, and unconditional positive regard
a gender role
the activities, abilities, and other characteristics our culture considers appropriate for our biological sex assigned at birth.
style of attachment
people who are secure in their intimate relationships probably had a secure, trusting, mutually satisfying attachment to their parents or caregivers
People who are clinging and dependent in their relationships may have had an anxious/ambivalent attachment, in which a caregiver’s inconsistent responses made them unsure that their needs would be met
People who run from relationships may have had an anxious/avoidant attachment as children. In this type of attachment, a caregiver’s responses were either engulfing or abandoning
According to psychologist Robert Sternberg, love has three dimensions
intimacy, passion, and commitment
polyamory
The practice of having more than one consensual intimate relationship at a time; also referred to as consensual non-monogamy.
Sex

(e.g., chromosomes, hormones, genitalia); most individuals
are either XX (female) or XY (male)
Gender
Includes roles and identity. Social categorization
based on psychological characteristics and roles that
society assigns to the biological sexes; more “fluid” than
sex; may or may not agree with biological categorization
Sexual Orientation

orientation toward people of the same sex or another sex
‘4 stages of
human sexual response
- Excitement phase
- Plateau phase
- Orgasmic phase
– Refractory phase (males) - Resolution phase
