Sewage Flashcards
Explain the need for continuous aeration for an aerobic sewage treatment plant
The breakdown of sewage is done naturally with the use of bacteria, aerobic bacteria or anaerobic bacteria.
Raw sewage contains both types.
AEROBIC BACTERIA
- with constant aeration it provides constant oxygen to the system keeping it aerobic, this oxygen keeps the aerobic bacteria alive and perform biological breakdown.
ANEROBIC BACTERIA
- if no oxygen is present the anaerobic bacteria will will survive and will still preform the biological breakdown.
- BUT this anaerobic bacteria also produce toxic gasses such as Methane, Hydrogen and Ammonia making the system a anaerobic system
CONCLUSION
- a constant aeration is needed to keep the aerobic bacteria alive to avoid the toxic gases produced by the anaerobic bacteria.
Describe the hazards that may be present when the plant requires internal maintenance or inspection
- Risk of Toxic Gasses (Methane, Hydrogen, Ammonia)
- Pathogens, Bacteria and other Diseases in the water.
- Physical Foreign Objects (broken Glass, Needles)
