What is an urban area?
A built up area, for example a town or a city.
What is a rural area?
An area outside of towns and cities.
What is the rural-urban fringe?
The point at which the urban area meets the rural.
What is a conurbation?
A very large urban area where several towns or cities have grown into each other with many services
What is a hamlet?
A very small group of houses with few services
What did most settlements start as?
Farming settlements
What is a dispersed settlement?
Things like isolated houses or farms, spread apart from each other which are often found in remote, upland areas.
What is a linear settlement?
A settlement built in a straight line along a communication line; river, road or in a valley.
What is a nucleated settlement?
A settlement clustered and grouped together, around a central point- crossroads, water supply or market place.
What is urbanisation?
An increase in the proportion of people in an urban area.
What is a megacity?
A city with over 10 million people living there.
What is a High Income Country?
A country that has a GNI per capita of $12,746 or above, according to the world bank.
What is a Low Income Country?
A country that has a GNI per capita of $1,045 or less, according to the World Bank.
What is urban growth?
When towns and cities increase in size covering a large area.
What is urban population?
The proportion of a county’s population living in towns or cities.
What causes urbanisation?
Rural-urban migration: the movement of people from the countryside to the city.
What are pushfactors?
Things that cause people to want to move away from an area.
What are pullfactors?
Things that attract you to an area
What is natural increase?
The growth in population resulting from more births than deaths per year.
What is regeneration?
The renewal and improvement of an area that has declined e.g. giving buildings a new use.
What is redevelopment?
The changing in land use of an area to improve it e.g. knocking buildings down and rebuilding.
What is urban decline?
The deterioration of the inner city often caused by lack of investment and maintenance.
