What is a map?
A map shows how places are related to eachother by distance, direction and size, by using scale.
How are maps useful?
Maps are useful because they show where different places are, and how to get to them. It also shows where certain landmarks are, the size of an area or the precipitation of a hill.
What are road maps used for?
To provide information for someone travelling in the area.
What are physical maps used for?
To provide information for someone studying the natural geography of the area or climbers.
What are ordnance survey maps used for?
To provide information for people doing leisure activities such as walking.
What are climate maps used for?
To provide information for meteorologists.
What are resource maps used for?
To provide information for travelers.
What are political maps used for?
To provide information for the government.
What is a compass?
Compass points are used to show the direction of places on maps
Name the types of map
Planimetric, topographic and thematric
What is a planimetric map?
Shows the 2D position of different features e.g. a street map
What is a topographic map?
Large scale detail and quantitative representation of relief, usually using contour lines.
What is a thematic map?
Shows where data is located over space e.g. population map
What is longitude and latitude?
Longitude is lines around the Earth, latitude is lines over the top of the Earth
What is the prime meridian?
The prime meridian is the central line of longitude/latitude
What is the difference between the United Kingdom, Great Britain and the British Isles?
The United Kingdom is England Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. Great Britain is England, Scotland and Wales. The British isles is the United Kingdom, Ireland and all the surrounding islands.
What is relief?
Relief describes the shape of the land
What are spot heights?
Spot heights give the exact height of a point on a map.
What is layer colouring?
Layer colouring is when bands of different colours are used for different heights.
What are contour lines?
Contours are lines drawn on a map. The closer together the contour lines are, the steeper the slope.
