What is an urban area?
An urban area is a built up area outside of towns and cities. For example a town or city, often urban areas have a higher population density.
What is a rural area?
A rural area is an area outside of towns and cities. Rural areas are less densely populated, for example agricultural areas and forests.
What is a rural urban area?
A rural urban area is the point at which the urban meets the rural one the edge of the city where it meets the country side.
What does TEA stand for?
Trend: The map shows that cities with a population of 10 million or more are located on the coast.
Evidence: The mega cities (population of 10 million or more) in America, South America, Africa, Asia and Australia are all on the coast.
Anomoly: A mega city that is not located on the coast is Moscow

What is a conurbation?
It is a very large urban area where several towns or cities have grown into each other with many services
What is a hamlet?
A hamlet is a very small group of houses with few services
What natural factors should we look for when building a settlement?
Wood;fires building materials
Water;cooking and cleaning
Flat land;farming
Hills nearby; protection
How can a settlement change?
No town or settlement remains the same forever over a period of time the following May change in a settlement: pattern (shape and size), function, land use, population
The function of settlements
The function describes the main purpose and activity or activities of that settlement. Most settlements began as a farming settlements. Over time this has changed. Some examples of functions for settlements are market town, tourist shops, trade.
What does dispersed mean?
Isolated houses or farms spread apart from each other, often found in remote upland areas.
What does linear mean?
Built in a line along a communication line, river, road or in a valley common where there is a narrow valley where a little space is available.
What does nucleated mean?
Clustered or grouped together around a central point water supply or market place common lowland areas.
What does urbanisation mean?
Urbanisation is an increase in the proportion of people living in an urban area.
What is a newly emerging economy?
A newly emerging economy or countries that are begun to experience high rates of economic development usually with rapid industrialisation. They differ from LIC’s in that They no longer rely primarily on agriculture, have made games in infrastructure and industrial growth, and are experiencing increasing incomes and high levels of investment for example Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa (BRIC’s countries)
