A

Renewable
Converts sun light to electricity
Good for the environment
Less effective on cloudy days

A

Renewable
Creates more energy in winter
Not good when there is no wind

Q

HEP

A

Renewable
It’s a clean fuel source the energy source of flowing water is free
Big damn projects can be disruptive of the river ecosystem

Q

Fossil fuels

A

Unrenewable
Easy to obtain or acquire
Extremely bad for the environment because they release carbon dioxide

Q

Geothermal

A

Renewable
It is always available as it takes advantage of the earths surface heat. Does not burn fossil fuels
Side effects are a rotten egg smell that can accompany released hydrogen sulphide

Q

Tidal

A

Renewable
Good for the environment and produces reliable, steady stream of electricity
Not many people us it as it’s still in its infancy
Produces energy obtained from tides

Q

What is Fracking

A

Hydraulic fracturing or fracking is a method used to obtain shale gas.
It’s the process of drilling down into the earth before a high pressured water know as slick water is directed at the rock to receive the gas.
The aim is to reach tiny pockets or cracks in the rock where gas molecules are locked away. A mixture of water, sand and chemicals (49.9% sand, 49.9% water and 0.05% polyacrylamide) is pumped down. The sand widens the cracks releasing the gas which flows back through the water to the surface and is taken away in tanks. The sand grains are known as proppants. When the drill is going down it goes for a few thousand metres and then turns and travels horizontally to retrieve the shake gas.

Q

Positives of Fracking

A

Ensures access to new deposits of oil and natural gas.
Lower prices because of the abundance of natural gas in the market
Improved air quality natural gas is considered a cleaner energy source than coal and oil
Lower prices as the gas will be made in the UK and not abroad
Provides jobs to thousands of people
Promotes the use of natural gas instead of coal and oil

Q

Negatives of Fracking

A

Contaminates the underground fresh water sources
Release of greenhouse gases
Creates quakes
Consumes large quantities of water
Creates noise
Turns people attention to natural gas rather than renewable energy
