Ghost Dance
A Paiute Indian had a vision that if Indians performed a peaceful ceremony called the Ghost Dance, a cloud would appear carrying missing buffalo, children taken to eastern schools, and dead ancestors
Wounded Knee
Chief Bigfoot led 350 others to convince Ghost dancers to remain peaceful. Army surrounded them at Wounded Knee Creek. 300 men, women, and children were killed
Sand Creek
John Chivington claimed to have defeated 500 warriors, but instead defeated 200 old men, women, and children. Called a hero by American newspapers
Little Bighorn
Custer attacked an Indian encampment of the Lakota and Cheyenne. Custer was outnumbered 10:1. Custer and the 7th cavalry were all killed.
Fred Harvey
Opened a series of restaurants called the Harvey House along railroads
Homestead Act
Provided 600 acres of free land if settlers would build a house on the land and live on it for five years
Cattle drives
Herding cattle over long distances. The need for cattle drives ended when railroads extended down into Texas
Effects of railroads on the country
