Union. Wanted to destroy the souths willingness to continue fighting. Took Atlanta and Savannah.
How did the Civil War affect the economies of both sides
South: couldn’t sell cotton which led to taxes
North: prices of goods rose
Gettysburg
Confederates wanted to threaten DC and defeat Union on their own soil. Confederates failed. Lee could never fully attack the north because he lost so many men. Major turning point in war. Bloodiest battle in US history.
Antietam
Confederates wanted to defeat Union. Lee moves into Maryland, but McClellan attacks in Sharpsburg. Lee pulls back and McClellan lets him go. McClellan was fired. Bloodied day in US history.
Vicksburg
After 6 months of siege warfare, Grant forces Pemberton to surrender Vicksburg. Union now has control of the Mississippi River. TX, AK, and LS are now separated from rest of the Confederacy.
The Burning of Lawrence
300-400 Bushwhackers raided and burned Lawrence, killing 200 men and boys for revenge.
Emancipation Proclamation
Issued by President Lincoln after Antietam
- freed all slaves in south
- didn’t free slaves in Border states
- began recruiting African American soldiers
