Setting the Stage Flashcards

1
Q

What is the difference in progress of technology and humans and what design has to do with it?

A
  • Technology progress is exponential
  • Human progress is linear
  • The gap between them today is high and can be closed with design

Q

Traditional innovation models and their limitations

A
  • Emphasis on planning: linear and rational development
  • Focus on solutions: functional perspective of user needs
  • Early convergence: minimizing the risk of failure
  • Jumping into the future considering the problem as given
  • -Right answers to the wrong problems

Q

Information in design thinking, how can it be acquired and processed?

A
  • We absorb information through concrete experiences or abstract conceptualization
  • We process information through reflective observation to active experimentation

Q

Designerly thinking recommendation on how to deal with problems and why?

A

Greater effort in critical sense-making
It results in a deep understanding and interpretation of the problem to be solved

  • Problems can’t be found, they need to be framed
  • The problem must be defined (or even created) to be solved
  • An effective problem framing enables creative and innovative solutions

Q

What is human-centered design?

A
  • Core principle of DT
  • A process that
  • -Starts with the people target
  • -Ends with a solution tailor-made to their needs
  • It’s all about building a deep empathy with the people target

Triangle model

  • From business as a purpose, people as mean and technology as a driver
  • To people as a purpose, technology as mean and business as a consequence

Q

What is reframing?

A
  • DT deals with poorly defined or highly ambiguous problems
  • (Re)framing allows moving from this initial problem to the true nailed problem
  • (Re)framing is a search and recombination process in the problem space
  • “Elevator is slow” example

Q

Contemporary debate on Design Thinking

A

Design Thinking, from indispensable skill to hype critique

Education
-There has been a boom in education. Design thinking has been added to many courses

M&A

  • There was a lot of acquisitions of design agencies by many types of companies (strategy consulting, big techs, software companies)
  • Digital transformation drove initial interest, but today it is more common for organizational transformation
  • -From the human-centric view of the user to the development of empathy of the employees, leading to transformation in business

DT movement
-From product and service innovation -> to strategic and managerial transformation

DT Frameworks
-There are hundreds of DT frameworks, simplification of many different steps for the same method

Opinions

  • -DT package designers way of working into a process, step by step, that anyone can apply to anything
  • -Buzz word. Misused method like a process with post-it, brainstorming…

++DT is not about the process, but the person behind the DT process
++A matter of notion, not knowledge
++DT is a tool and sometimes is not the best one
