Q

what are the roles of the IUCN

A
  • coordinate global data on biodiversity conservation

6
Q

what is an EDGE species

A

an evolutionary distinct and globally endangered species= if there are few closely related species the existing species is often the last surviving genus such as the pygmy hippo- therefore it is important to preserve these species

Q

what is an endemic species

A

a species which isn’t found in any other area so if there are change to threats to its survival they are likely to die out

Q

what is a keystone species

a species which has an important ecological role in maintaining ecological structure of a community such as food provision or seed dispersal eg elephants

Q

what is a flagship species

A

a species which holds a high public profile there by raising support for its protection it will benefit conservation in general including species in the same habitat that are less likley to attract support eg polar bares

10
Q

why are habitats under threat used to categories select species

A
  • their status may indicate the status of the rest of the community such as the decline of lemurs being used to predict the decline of many other species
